More Planning
In early March I did a post all about paper art. This featured work by Brian Dettmer that consisted of old books and maps, carved out into intricate maze-like sculptures.
Scott Campbell
While I was checking out Dettmer, I ran across an article for an exhibition by Scott Campbell.
Scott’s tattooist styles can easily be seen in his intricate stacks of gutted dollar bills. In some, he even changes the stencil as it gets deeper, giving the images a 3D aspect.

My Version
When I saw Scott’s art, I knew I had to try to create something along those lines.
In a effort to do something similar, but without using dollar bills (since I’m pretty much broke), I decided to use card stock. First, I designed a quick tag using the pen and brush tools in Adobe Illustrator. Next, I messed around with strokes and a drop shadow in Photoshop.
Once I was happy with the design, I made a printable layout with three pieces per page. Next, I wanted to try and attempt a little bit of 3D.
For a third of the pages, the design of the stencils included the main line of the tag, the stroke around it, and the drop shadow. Another third of the pages consisted of the main line and the stroke, but not the drop shadow. Finally, the last third included only the main line of the tag. Also, to give the piece a back, I had several layers of just a solid rectangle.
Here’s a sample of my original design:
Stay tuned to check out how this project turns out.
